Giant Slayers: Walking in Victory This September

Updated: Oct 1

This summer at Brand New U has been a powerful journey. In July, we talked about being the bridge—a generation that links past wisdom with future hope. In August, we stepped through open doors, leaning into God’s promises and saying yes to new opportunities.

Now in September, our theme is Giant Slayers.

Because the truth is—when you walk through open doors and begin to take new territory, giants will show up. Giants of fear. Giants of doubt. Giants of comparison. Giants of impossibility.

But here’s the good news: every giant we face is no match for the God who goes before us.

Trusting God’s Hand

David stood before Goliath with nothing more than a sling and five smooth stones. To the world, he looked unprepared. But David declared, “The battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47). His confidence wasn’t in his weapon but in God’s character.

The same is true for us. We can face the “giants” in our lives because we know the heart and hand of our God. He has already proven faithful.

Jesus Himself defeated the greatest giant of all—death—through the cross and resurrection. Because of that victory, we don’t fight for victory; we fight from victory. We live in resurrection power.

New Testament Giant Slayers

We see this lived out in the New Testament:

  • Peter once cowered in fear, denying Jesus three times. Yet after the resurrection and the power of the Holy Spirit, Peter boldly preached to thousands at Pentecost (Acts 2). His giant of fear was defeated by trust in Christ’s presence and Spirit.

  • Paul faced beatings, prison, shipwrecks, and constant opposition. Yet he declared, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). Paul’s giant of persecution didn’t stop him; instead, it propelled him to spread the gospel farther than he ever imagined.

Both Peter and Paul show us that giant-slaying isn’t about our strength—it’s about God’s Spirit at work in us.

Living as a Giant Slayer

So how do we slay giants today?

  1. Replace fear with trust. When the giant looks overwhelming, remember God’s hand is steady.

  2. Remember His character. He is faithful. He has always been faithful.

  3. Live from victory. Jesus already won the decisive battle. Every fight you face is one you fight with resurrection power.

As we continue into this fall season, let’s not shrink back at the sight of obstacles. Instead, let’s rise up as Giant Slayers, crossing the bridges God has called us to build, walking through the doors He has opened, and claiming the territory He has already promised.

As Elevation Worship sings in New Thing Coming: Let us “Tell this giant in my face, you’re not greater than my faith. I’ve got a new thing coming!”

Together, we are an army of God who will do great exploits for the kingdom. Happy September! Let’s Go Giant Slaying!
